1. INTRODUCTION AND PRELIMINARIES The [L.sub.1] -algebras of (signed) hypergroups show very distinctive properties compared with those of [L.sub.1] -algebras of groups. The large number of [L.sub.1] -algebras of (signed) polynomial hypergroups (which are determined by a sequence {Rn}neNo of orthogonal polynomials) show a broad diversity of properties. Thus, they are highly suitable to illustrate the difference between groups and hypergroups.
